Summary: A young boy (Haley Joel Osment) is dropped off by his mother (Kyra Sedgwick) to live with his two uncles (Robert Duvall, Michael Caine) for the summer. At first, the trio are not sure what to make of each other, but slowly they bond together and teach each other several life lessons.

Review:

Tim: This is a terrific movie for preteens, teens, and even their parents all to watch together. It is an excellent family movie, even if it doesn't seem like it would be at first. In fact, throughout much of the film, it doesn't have the look or the feel of a family movie. Once you get into it, however, you will see it for its true nature.

Secondhand Lions is a very actor-driven film. This is partially why it succeeds so well. The story itself is interesting, but offers nothing particularly new or entertaining. The actors playing their roles offer us the most enjoyment of the film. Haley Joel Osment proves that even as he is growing up and currently in an awkward state of development, he is not going to lose his ability to act and act well. Although he is no longer the cute child actor that appeared in The Sixth Sense, the kid can still act. Even though he looks and appears off-balance, (puberty sucks, my friends) he still manages an incredible feat- to hold his own against legends like Michael Caine and Robert Duvall. Even more surprisingly, oftentimes he is more enjoyable to watch. However, make no mistake about it- Robert Duvall and Michael Caine are both incredible in this film.

The supporting cast is decent at best. Kyra Sedgwick offers very little, as does Nicky Katt. Josh Lucas has a small but important role and is always great to see on screen.

This film is perfect for children. It offers them a safe and fun environment in which to be entertained, but to also learn some important life lessons. Best of all, they should appreciate that the film treats them not as little children, but as young adults. This film does not cater to little children, but offers them a chance to enjoy the movie in its own right. Secondhand Lions is also equally enjoyable for adults.
