Review:

Tim: I know Scoob! didn't get the best reviews from critics, but I actually enjoyed the movie. It might have flaws, yes, but it was a unique spin on the familiar story and I found it more entertaining than not. I think the critics were wrong in this case.

I read some complaints that this movie combined the Mystery, Inc. gang with many other Hanna-Barbera characters. I guess the thought is that it diminished the story of Scooby, Shaggy, and the rest of the gang? I actually loved this. We already got two live action movies with these characters, plus many, many episodes of the original television series. You could argue that we didn't need another Scooby-Doo movie. However, this film's approach feels more novel. The team-up episodes were always some of my favorite growing up and that's taken to the next level here. Yes, the movie feels less like a traditional Scooby-Doo movie and more of a celebration of Hanna-Barbera, but I was definitely good with that.

The main characters are all solid- I enjoyed the depictions of Shaggy, Scooby, Fred, Velma, and Daphne. They all worked well. I was really excited to see the inclusion of Blue Falcon and Dynomutt. I remember them from my childhood and it was fun seeing them here. I loved the collaboration between them and Mystery Incorporated. It was also fun having Dick Dastardly and Muttley as the villains. Captain Caveman was a great addition, too. As a whole, I thought the diverse group of characters made for a novel, fun experience.

The voice cast was good. Will Forte did well as Shaggy. Mark Wahlberg was surprisingly excellent as Blue Falcon- I thought he did a really excellent job. Jason Isaacs makes a great villain. Zac Efron was solid as Fred and Gina Rodriguez and Amanda Seyfried worked well as Velma and Daphne. Ken Jeong made a terrific Dynomutt. As a whole, the cast worked well in their roles. You didn't have any one voice that felt disruptive, they all brought their characters effectively to life.

The visuals were solid and I appreciated the animation. It didn't offer up anything revolutionary, but it was certainly effective. It added to the film. The story worked, too- it was fun seeing how Shaggy met Scooby and the initial formation of Mystery, Inc. The film never sets the world on fire- it's just another Scooby-Doo movie, but the story worked more often than it didn't. It wasn't too long at 1 hour, 33 minutes, but it dig drag in a few places.

Scoob! may not be a classic, but it was an entertaining, effective movie. I had fun watching it and my kids really enjoyed it, too. It was actually the first introduction to these characters they've ever had. I liked the movie and consider it good- a perfectly watchable film that my entire family enjoyed.
