Review:

Tim: This is a somewhat small but classic late 80s romantic comedy that succeeds because of its honesty and because of John Cusack. The classic Cusack-holding-the-boombox scene (though a bit odd, is still incredible- and what an excellent song!) is just terrific to see.

The film works because its realistic portrayal of young love. That is not to say the film doesn't make miscalculations- one plot "twist" nearly ruins the movie. However, there is enough done right for this to be labeled a sucess.

John Cusack is outstanding. He is such a loveable, charasmatic character. I'd watch him in just about anything, and he is so damn enjoyable to see on screen. He was born to play roles like this. Unfortunately, the supporting cast doesn't provide quite enough support. They aren't terrible, but they needed to be better.

Say Anything is just a fun 80s/almost-90s teen love comedy. It features Cusack being likeable, a very romantic story that girls will love, some truly memorable scenes, and it will make you love Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" (if you don't already, and you should because it is terrific). How can you not like a film with a tagline like this- "To know Lloyd Dobler is to love him. Diane Court is about to know Lloyd Dobler." If that's not enough, look for Cusack's "I'm looking for a dare to be great situation" line. It is excellent, as is a large portion of this movie. You can say anything you want to about this movie, but it is enjoyable and fun and I recommend it.
